Creating high-quality content for the web relies on several important factors including style, length, and grammar. To write the best content for your website, blog, or news section, keep these helpful tips in mind.

Helpful Tips for…Grammar

  • Use exclamation marks sparingly in your website content
  • Utilize hyperlinks instead of inserting a long, unreadable URL
  • Insert only one space after each period (using two spaces is an outdated and unnecessary practice)
  • Before using acronyms, always introduce the full phrase (i.e. Search Engine Optimization first and SEO thereafter)
  • Keep point of view consistent by not shifting from first person to third person or singular to plural

Helpful Tips for…Length

1. Web Pages: 250+ Words

As long as you have an interactive way to organize content or an intuitive way to move a user through a long-scrolling web page, there is no limit to how much content you can have on a page. On the contrary, there is a minimum. Search engines consider web pages with less than 250 words to be too ‘thin’. Websites with less than 250 words may not be viewed as content pages by search engine bots and therefore, may not be indexed in search results. Always try and hit that 250 mark on all of your content pages!

2. Blog Posts: 300+ Words

Your blog posts can be as short at 300 words or as long as 3,000 provided that the content is well-written and value-added. Market Tech Blog recommends an average blog post length of 1,600 words. This of course is a lengthier blog so if you are aiming for 1,600 words break up the content with bullet points, lists, and images.

Helpful Tips for…Style

It is true that robots – not humans – crawl your website and index it in search results. However, we must remember that these robots are more advanced than we think. Search engines have spent years developing complex algorithms aimed at reading web content and understanding it as well as a human could. Search engine algorithms can determine which content humans find useful based on a myriad of factors. While not perfect, these algorithms are extremely advanced. Therefore, we must remain focused on the human user. After all, humans are our target audience.
