Yes! Typography is an art. There are many design factors to consider when building a website or creating digital content. Typography is a key element that is often overlooked by those who don’t have a design background. With these simple tips the graphic designer in you will be able to nail future creative projects:

  1. Your Font Decides Your Character. When it comes to design, font type is just as important as the overall look of a website. Your audience is there to read the content on your site. While they are not there to examine the colors or graphical structure, their perceptions are affected by it. The font that you choose will set the character of your company or product.

  2. Set a Limit. It is important to note that no matter what kind of project it is, sticking to a minimum of 2-4 typefaces is ideal. A site can look too busy and unprofessional if too many typefaces make up its content.

  3. Be Unique in Your Font Choice. Choose a typeface that is different from the rest and make it shine. Typography can make the difference of letting your site stand out against your competitors’ sites who more often than not stick to Arial or Helvetica.

  4. Establish Hierarchy. Increasing the font size of your site not only engages your audience but it also creates a clear hierarchy of what content is most important for them to read. The average human attention span dropped from 12 seconds in the year 2000 to 8 seconds now. People need to be able to skim and find what it is they are looking for in a limited time. Using bigger sizes can also help you get more creative with your content.

  5. It’s All About Sans Serif. There are two different categories of fonts: Serif and Sans Serif. Serifs are considered “decorative” additions to a font. When choosing a Serif font there will be more detail to the letters as opposed to a Sans Serif font which, quite literally means without serifs. In the modern design world, it is highly recommended to use Sans Serif fonts as they are considered more modern in appearance and easier to read.
