RSS Feeds
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format for content distribution.
You can think of RSS as a “web feed.” Major news sites like NYTIMES.com, Wired, National Public Radio and many, many others all provide content in this format.
In a typical scenario of using web feeds, a content provider publishes a feed link on their site which end users can register to receive with an RSS aware program. Once registered, the software automatically checks the feed for changes and delivers information directly to the end user.
Compared to websites, web feeds have a few advantages for the user experience:
- Users can be notified of new content without having to actively check for it.
- The information presented to users in an aggregator is basic compared to most websites.
- Media files can be automatically downloaded without user intervention.
- Like Blogs and Podcasts, RSS offers another method of distributing content from your site.
