If you work for a small business, you likely understand how challenging social media can be when faced with limited resources. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to get the most out of your social media efforts, even if you don’t have the time or resources that a large corporation has. We are going to provide you with four helpful tips for maximizing your social strategy.

1. Designate a Social Media Manager or Team

The biggest mistake that small businesses make when developing a social strategy is not designating a specific person or team to take charge. By designating a person or persons to oversee your social strategy, you can ensure that it remains a priority. Whether you assign the social media efforts to your marketing team, hire an intern, or outsource to a web agency, it is important that someone is delegated these duties.

2. Start Small

According to a survey by Social Media Examiner, 33% of respondents report that they devote 1 to 5 hours weekly to social media marketing. Keep in mind that you don’t have to “go big or go home” when it comes to social media for small businesses. First determine which resources you have available and then decide how many hours you can spend on social each week. If you only have 1-3 hours, focus on just one social media platform. You can start small and always add more social channels and activities later.

3. Create a Daily Plan

Another challenge that many businesses (small and large) face on social media is writer’s block. To avoid writer’s block, it is best to have a daily, weekly, or even monthly plan. We recommend creating a simple editorial calendar that outlines your topics in advance. This will help you maintain a steady flow of posts over time.

4. Manage a Blog

If you are unsure as to what you will post about on social each day, begin blogging. Blogs provide a substantial amount of social media fodder and help drive traffic to your website. Once you develop a blog, you can share a link to it on your social sites, quote passages from it, and refer back to it months down the road. Blogging offers a host of benefits. We strongly encourage it!
